Dr Donnelly said the legislation which has been put to parliament by the Andrews government seeks to prevent “parents, even doctors, psychiatrists and worst of all religious leaders” from offering advice or counselling teenagers and young children.

“That will be an illegal offence if the legislation is passed,” he said.

Dr Donnelly told Sky News that the conversion therapy practices of 20-30 years ago were “unfair and unjustified,” but the legislation targets much more than those antiquated measures.
